How to play the guitar

Learning to play the guitar is super fun and not as hard as you might think. Whether you’re into country, rock, or pop, the basics are all the same. The first thing is just to get comfortable with your guitar by learning all of its parts, like the body, neck, fretboard, and strings. If you’re playing an acoustic guitar, the sound comes from the hollow body, but if you have an electric guitar, you’ll need an amp to hear it properly.

To properly hold a guitar you place your non-dominant hand on the neck while resting the body of the guitar on your thigh. This positions your dominant hand to freely strum or pick the strings. Once you know how to hold your guitar start learning some basic chords. The easiest ones to start with are G, C, D, and E minor. These chords are used in a ton of songs so learning them will help you play real music fast. Strumming is just as important so practice different strumming patterns and switching between chords smoothly. It might feel awkward at first but with practice it’ll start to feel natural.

Finally after you’ve got a few chords down try playing simple songs. A lot of country songs only use three or four chords so they’re perfect for beginners. Look up chord charts for your favorite songs and start playing along. The most important thing is to be patient and have fun with it. Nobody learns overnight so practice a little every day and don’t get frustrated. If you stick with it you’ll be able to play your favorite songs before you know it
